According to statistics, friction consumes a third of the world's disposable energy and about 80 percent of the machine parts are worn out because of wear and tear, and the annual loss is considerable. Therefore, the development of surface protection and strengthening technology has received universal attention from all over the world.

Surface engineering technology can produce a thin layer of surface that is superior to the properties of the body material, which provides them with some excellent properties such as high-temperature resistance, wear resistance and fatigue resistance. Among them, plasma spraying is an important technology in surface engineering that has been widely used in various fields of national economy due to its advantages of high coating hardness and excellent abrasion resistance.

Plasma spraying is a thermal spraying with plasma arc as heat source. It refers to a kind of surface engineering technology that uses a plasma arc to heat a metal or nonmetallic powder into a molten or semi-molten state and then spray it onto the surface of the workpiece to form an overlay, which can improve the performance of corrosion resistance, wear resistance and heat resistance of the workpiece.

Friction and wear are common phenomena in all machine equipment. The most typical application of plasma spray coating is wear-resistant coating. Plasma spraying ceramic and metal ceramic coating can not only make the parts have high hardness, excellent wear resistance, but also low friction coefficient and low energy consumption, which are widely used in machinery, aviation and other fields. The spraying materials are usually made of Al2O3, Cr2O3, TiO2 and other ceramic powders.

Another way to reduce wear is to reduce the friction coefficient of contact surfaces. Plasma spraying aluminum and aluminum alloy composite coating shows excellent wear resistance and anti-adhesion wear resistance on the boundary lubrication condition. At the same time, the coating can be combined with high strength, low porosity, excellent quality and stability due to the requirements of spraying process.
