Macromolecular intelligent materials are made by organic and synthetic methods to make non-living organic materials seem to have "feeling" and "perception", which have been applied in real life and is becoming a new research topic for science and technology workers in various countries, and they are expected to enter our life in the near future.

For thousands of years, buildings have been built to simulate the shells of animals, and ceilings and walls have been airtight to separate the inside from the outside. Scientists are working on a new kind of building material called "cloud glue" that can adjust the temperature and light of itself, which consists of a mixture of water and a polymer. Part of the polymer is oily and it clumps water molecules around the polymer fibers in a frozen way at low temperatures, which just like an ice-jacket. The rope-like polymer is arranged in strings, transparent and can pass through 90 percent of the light. When it is heated, the polymer molecules tumble like noodles in boiling water and discard their ice-jackets, allowing the fibres to coalesce. In most cases, this transition can be made within two or three degrees of temperature difference and is reversible.

Buildings with "skin" like this can adapt to their surroundings. When the weather is cold, it becomes transparent to let the sun in; when the weather is warm and sunlight must be blocked, it becomes translucent. A skylight with a cloud cover provides a relatively constant amount of incoming light as the sun moves from one end of the sky to the other. Multilayer glass filled with cloud glue can be used not only as a ceiling but also as a wall.

Macromolecular intelligent materials have become an important research field in material science, and scientists around the world are making unremitting efforts to this end. It has been proved from the history of human development that the discovery and utilization of every important material will raise human's ability to dominate and transform nature to a new level, and it will bring great changes to social productivity and human life and push human material and spiritual civilization one step forward. To be sure, there will come a day when all kinds of practical intelligent materials will appear in large quantities in front of us.
