Many chemists tried to remove the single fluorine from hydrofluoric acid, but they were forced to give up the experiment because they were exposed to excessive amounts of hydrogen fluoride in the experiment.



Movassan designed a whole set of ways to curb the violent reaction of fluorine. He made hydrogen fluoride without water in a platinum-made fleck, and added potassium fluoride to enhance its electrical conductivity. He then used a platinum iridium alloy as an electrode and chloroform as a coolant, and an experimental process was designed. Finally, in 1886, the single fluorine was obtained, and the "death element" was captured.


The elemental fluorine is a pale yellow gas that can be combined with almost all the elements at room temperature. Most metals are corroded by fluorine, and even gold burns in fluorine when heated. If you put the fluorine in the water, it will take the hydrogen from the water and give off the oxygen.



Why do people who lack of fluorine have cavities? That's because the foods we eat every day are polysaccharides.
